Welsh Archery Association - Supporting Archery In Wales

Welsh Senior Academy 2026

16 SEPTEMBER 2026 21:05

Welsh Archery Association (WAA) Senior Target Archery Academy

Applications are invited from archers who would like the opportunity to attend the Welsh Archery Association (WAA) Senior Target Archery Academy.

Academy training sessions will give archers access to coaching, training and support to further develop their archery skills with a view to competing at the higher levels of archery and to possibly represent Wales as part of the official Welsh Senior Target Team at a variety of events.

We are looking for archers who are interested in developing their skills and who are willing to try new techniques and make changes to improve their performance with the support of the Academy coaches. The emphasis of the sessions will be on form and technique (rather than scoring or just additional shooting sessions).

WAA Academy archers are expected to put themselves forward for the Welsh Senior Team. However, being a member of the Academy will not automatically guarantee a place on any Welsh Senior Team as WAA will ask all Welsh archers to express an interest for any given event at the relevant time.

Academy sessions will be held monthly as follows with most of the sessions being held in Sophia Gardens in Cardiff and one session being held in North Wales:

Oct 18th

Nov 15th

Dec 13th

Jan 17th 2027

Feb 21st

March – date and venue to be confirmed but this will be at Lilleshall

The Academy will consist of 18 members, wherever possible this will be made up of 6 recurve archers - 3 male and 3 female, 6 compound archers - 3 male and 3 female and 6 barebow archers – 3 male and 3 female.

We will also be offering afternoon Improvers sessions where archers will have access to the Academy coaches and will have the opportunity to learn from other archers in the Senior Academy.

All applicants are asked to submit an application to show what they want to gain through attending the academy along with 5 tournament scores of Bowmen standard or above from Record Status events from the current outdoor season. Archers who are interested in attending these training sessions and do not have the relevant scores are asked to submit a form which will be considered should there be any vacancies.

Archers who are selected for the Academy will be expected to attend all training sessions unless prior approval given by the Academy manager. WAA will part fund the provision of training and coaching as part of the training sessions. This year WAA are asking for a contribution towards the costs of the Academy, and the contributions are as follows:

Academy sessions - £20 per session, payable either in full before the first session or in two instalments – £60 before the first session and £60 before the January session.

Improvers sessions - £10 per session, payable before each session.

Archers will also be expected to pay their own travel expenses to academy training events.

Only archers who are members of WAA can apply to join the senior target academy.

If you are interested in accessing this additional coaching and training and would like to be part of the Senior Target Archery Squad or attend the Improvers sessions, please complete the application form and return it by 5th October 2026.
